Duties

This is an open continuous announcement. Applications will be accepted and referred on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. The Emergency Department Physician Assistant is responsible for managing patients with emergent and/or urgent medical and psychological complaints in an Emergency Department setting. Management is achieved through assessment, planning, implementation, collaboration and evaluation to meet the needs of patients. The Physician Assistant promotes self-care and enlists the participation of patients in establishing realistic health goals and adheres to the American Standards of Practice for the Acute Care Physician Assistant. Physician Assistant Basic Requirements Exceptions for Graduate PAs. * PAs who otherwise meet the basic requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed, pending licensure, as a graduate PA on a temporary full-time appointment not-to-exceed two years under the authority of 38 U.S.C. ? 7405(c)(2)(B). Preferred Experience: Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements stated above, the following qualification criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates. Grade and Step determinations of the selected applicant will be determined by the appropriate Physician Assistant Professional Standards Board and will be based on the selected individuals education and experience.

Physician Assistant-I (PA-I) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Ability to utilize the principles of PA practice in the care of assigned patients to provide appropriate care
2. Ability to perform patient history and physical
3. Ability to formulate a plan and provide treatment to the patient
4. Ability to provide patient care that is abreast of changing concepts and advancements in the profession

Physician Assistant-II (PA-II) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Skills to analyze and solve complex medical problems
2. Ability to function autonomously and make independent medical decisions
3. Skill to incorporate training and experience into the successful practice of patient care including telehealth medical care
4. Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment for improvement of services for patient care
5. Ability to practice with colleagues and peers collaboratively.

Physician Assistant-III (PA-III) References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-8 Physician Assistant Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. The full performance level of this vacancy is Grade 3. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of Grade 1 to Grade 3.

Physical Requirements: The work requires standing or walking for a major portion of the workday. In the clinics you may need to assist patients into the examination rooms when in wheelchairs or on carts, which could consist of a variety of standing, walking, twisting, turning, sitting, bending, pushing, carrying and light lifting. This may be considered demanding physical activity.
